Bench-Repair-4

Time to reassemble the garden-bench seat back.

Bench-Repair-4... Now that the cast iron seat back has been painted, it's time to mark and drill the mounting holes in the new Purple Heart seat back rails. Place the seat back (face up) on your work bench.

Now take the hole assembly and turn it over so that it is face down on the workbench. Ensure that the mounting holes on the cast iron seat back are lined up correctly with the rails and mark all the mounting holes.

Once the holes are marked, pre drill them using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screws being used. This will keep the wood from splitting when installing the new wood screws. Set the completed garden-bench seat back assembly aside for now.

The next step is to begin the assembly of the bench seat itself. I began with the last rail and worked my way forward. You may have to do some sanding on the edges where the rails meet the cast iron sides.

Now that the bottom is assembled take the bench seat back assembly and attach it to the bench. The seat back attached to the bench itself using the holes previously drilled into the top and bottom rails. Just like the seat bottom rails, hand tighten all four bolts ensuring a good fit prior to snugging all the bolts to attach the seat back.

Once you've attached and snugged up the last bolts... place the bench in the desired location in your yard... the Purple Heart wood will age gracefully and stand the test of time. If you desire to keep the purple color, you can polyurethane the wood or simple let it gray with time. It's really a personal preference.
